I. Causes
Clutch failure
Incomplete clutch disengagement: this can lead to difficulty in engaging the gears smoothly when shifting, thus making the gears feel unclear. It may be caused by excessive free travel of the clutch pedal, softening or breaking of the clutch pressure plate spring, or excessive wear of the clutch friction disc.
Clutch slippage: When the clutch slips, the power transmission is unstable, which also affects the clarity of the gear. It is usually caused by oil on the surface of the clutch friction disc, severe wear or insufficient pressure.
Transmission fluid problems: Insufficient, deteriorated or contaminated transmission fluid affects the lubrication and proper functioning of the gears, resulting in unclear gears. For example, when the fluid is insufficient, the friction between the gears increases, and shifting difficulties and unclear gears may occur; deteriorated or contaminated fluid reduces lubrication performance and makes the gears run poorly.
Damaged synchroniser: The function of the synchroniser is to synchronise the speed of the gears when shifting gears so that the gears can be shifted smoothly. If the synchroniser is worn, damaged or ineffective, it will lead to unclear gears or even tooth beating.
Gear wear: After long-term use, transmission gears may become worn and the tooth surface becomes uneven, thus affecting the clarity of the gears. Especially for trucks that are often driven under heavy loads, high speeds or poor road conditions, gear wear will be more serious.
Manoeuvring mechanism problems
Loose shift lever and connecting parts: If the connecting parts between the shift lever and the transmission, such as ball head and tie rod, are loose, it will lead to inaccurate operation when shifting gears and make the gears feel unclear.
Improperly adjusted shift cable: If the shift cable is too loose or too tight, it will affect the accuracy and smoothness of the shift. When it is too loose, the shifting action may not be fully transmitted to the transmission; when it is too tight, it may cause too much resistance to shifting, affecting the clarity of the gear.

II.The treatment method
Check the clutch
Adjust the free travel of the clutch pedal: Follow the vehicle’s instruction manual to correctly adjust the free travel of the clutch pedal so that it is within the proper range. Generally speaking, too little free travel will result in incomplete clutch disengagement, while too much will make the clutch pedal travel too long, affecting operating comfort.
Check the clutch pressure disc and friction disc: If the pressure disc spring is found to be soft or broken, or the friction disc is found to be excessively worn, the corresponding parts should be replaced promptly. At the same time, make sure the surface of the clutch friction disc is clean and free of oil and debris.
Solve the problem of clutch slipping: if the slipping is caused by oil on the surface of the friction disc, the friction disc can be cleaned; if the friction disc is worn out seriously or the pressure is insufficient, the friction disc needs to be replaced or the pressure of the clutch pressure plate needs to be adjusted.
Maintaining the transmission
Check and replace the transmission fluid: Check the level and quality of the transmission fluid regularly; if the fluid is found to be insufficient, deteriorated or contaminated, it should be added or replaced in time. When replacing the transmission fluid, choose a quality fluid suitable for the vehicle model and follow the correct method.
Repair or replace the synchroniser: if the synchroniser is damaged, it should be repaired or replaced in time. When replacing the synchroniser, choose reliable quality parts and make sure they are installed correctly.
Check the wear of gears: If the gears are found to be badly worn, the corresponding gears should be replaced in time. At the same time, attention should be paid to keep the transmission clean to avoid impurities from entering the inside of the transmission and aggravating the wear of the gears.
Adjusting the manoeuvring mechanism
Tighten the shift lever and connecting parts: check the connecting parts between the shift lever and the transmission, such as the ball head, tie rod, etc., and tighten them in time if they are loose. Ensure that the operation of the shift lever is flexible and accurate.
Adjusting the shift cable: According to the vehicle’s instruction manual, correctly adjust the tightness of the shift cable so that it is within the proper range. This can be done by adjusting the length of the pull cable or adjusting the position of the fixing point.
